An extremely interesting post on LifeHackerhas revealed Omnimo, a “metro/zune UI inspired, highly functional and customizable complete rainmeter desktop skin suite, the name is derived from the word WinMo (backwards it’s OmniW), and has a latin equivalent Omnimodus which means universal, and universal is this project’s middle name.” Basically, it installs a skin on Windows Vista, 7, and even XP, that is almost identical to the Windows 7 Phone interface, bringing out a unique, beautiful feel that can only be achieved by some of the most superb desktop candy available.

On top of all that, it’s also free. It’s built on Rainmeter, an extremely light, open source customization package, that claims that “with Rainmeter, there are no secrets. Our bundled library of open-source skins covers a wide range of functions, but if you want your desktop to do something new, you don’t have to wait for us.” Rainmeter looks extremely promising, and Omnimo shows the potential of the package.

Gizmodo has also reported on the recent release, pointing out that Omnimo may even be an alternative to Windows 7 Phone until it comes out if you want more than the demo but don’t want to hack the emulator (exact Windows 7 Phone replica not included).

When you’re done setting it up, the Omnimo customization will add Windows Phone 7-style widgets to your desktop that’ll give you quick access to weather, calendars, your favorite programs, your unread email, notes, system monitoring (like CPU, hard drive, and RAM use), Wi-Fi signal strength, and oh-so-much-more. Best of all, everything’s easily customizable via drag and drop once you make it through the setup, so you can make it look however you want.

I’ve installed Omnimo on my spare Windows system, and it’s quick, seamless, and fluid. An update has already been released for the pack (1.01) on its Deviantart homepage. Lifehacker also included a highly detailed guide on setup and configuration which can also be found in their article.
